Old Midwest farm house received a major update with matching aesthetics.
Project: Duffy Library
Location: Walker, Iowa
Building Type: Residential
Window Products Selected: European windows with tilt/turn design.
Designed by: The owner! It wasn’t on a napkin but the owner did draw the glass concept on a piece of paper. Hawkeye Windows took the original image, incorporated European windows and came up with a first-run shop drawing which was eventually tweaked to what is shown above.
Summary: The Duffy House is a classic example of the charming two story farm houses that blanket the landscape of Eastern Iowa. Constructed at an unknown time, the windows were original single pane glass with additional aluminum exterior storms.
For this project, Hawkeye Windows and Doors was engaged to supply tilt/turn European windows and patio doors, while coordinating design concepts with the carpenter. Hawkeye was able to offer an ease-of-use window application with contemporary features; while blending the designs of old world craftsmanship the owner envisioned for his home.
Although the original plan called for standard prairie grids, our skilled team at Hawkeye was able to masterfully replicate a deep affinity for classical Literature with a stunning custom designed leaded glass window. Keeping with the ‘feel’ of the room, this concept was also embodied in the small doors encased in the library’s bookrack. While the other windows in the house remained clear, a bow window in the project also received a brilliant enhancement of artistic glass.
By renovating the original farmhouse, rather than tearing it down and building new- considerable resources were preserved and the structure was safeguarded from a fate in the local landfills. At Hawkeye, we are proud that our services and products played a role in preserving an invaluable piece of Iowa’s agricultural history- where we gave new life to a beloved Midwestern farm house that has, once again, become a beautiful home.
