Measure the Door Frame
When buying a door it is important to make measurements of the door frame that is going to be fitted with the door. Identify the height, width, depth of the frame. They typically come in standard widths of 36 inches, an average height of 80 inches, and lengths ranging between 80 to 96 inches, but it is always good to check again to ensure that you do not make a mistake.
Remove the Old Door (If Applicable)
If you’re replacing an existing door, carefully remove it:
- Remove the bolts holding the hinges and pull out the door.
- Take out the former hinges, screws, and in the best possible manner, strip off the weather stripping.
- If you wish to replace the door frame also then you should use a pry bar to remove the frame or any trim.
Prepare the Door Frame
Check this side of the frame to see if there are signs of rot, crack or any other structural problem. Fill off any dented or spoilt area and make sure the new door fits in the right manner. In case more water protection is required, a sill pan can be included to prevent water penetration into the bottom of the frame.
Test the Fit
Put the new door (or pre-hung door) back into the frame to see how it fits, while following the instructions carefully:
- Use a screwdriver or drill to unscrew the hinges and take the door off the frame.
- Remove the old hinges, screws, and any weather stripping.
- Use a pry bar to carefully detach the frame or trim if you’re replacing the door frame as well.
Attach the Hinges
- For those that include slab door type, it is necessary to make a chisel cut out the hinges recesses on the door.
- After that, put screws to lock the hinges in place of the door.
- Ensure the door matches the frame, then proceed in screwing the hinge on the frame.
Insert Shims
Shims are essential for ensuring the door is level and plumb. Place shims between the door frame and rough opening:
- Start at the hinge locations and adjust until the door aligns perfectly.
- Use a level to verify that the door is straight vertically and horizontally.
Secure the Door
Once the door is level and properly shimmed, secure it to the frame:
- Drive screws through the hinges into the frame for slab doors.
- For pre-hung doors, nail or screw the frame into place through the shimmed areas.
Insulate and Seal
To improve energy efficiency, fill gaps between the door frame and rough opening with insulation foam or caulk. This step helps block drafts and enhances the door’s performance.
Attach Trim and Hardware
- Reinstall or add trim around the door frame to cover gaps and shims.
- Install the doorknob, lock, and any additional hardware. Ensure the latch aligns with the strike plate.
Test the Door
Open and close the door multiple times to ensure it operates smoothly. Check for any sticking or misalignment and make final adjustments if necessary.
Finishing Touches
If the door is unfinished, apply paint or stain to match your design preferences. Let it dry thoroughly before use.
